Target Audience
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of nurses, physicians, and other health and legal professionals involved in the treatment and care of victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.
Statement of Need/Program Overview
It is assumed that through education as well as on the job training medical providers possess the knowledge and skill necessary to provide holistic, comprehensive, compassionate care to the patients they serve. Most medical providers, however, have not received training or developed the skills to provide expert, objective and empirically sound court testimony.
Educational Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:
- Identify the components necessary to develop expertise as a medical/nursing provider in cases of child sexual abuse.
- Summarize the necessary steps to prepare for testimony in a legal proceeding.
- Identify the factors that aid in delivering successful expert testimony.

Hollye Gallion is a pediatric nurse practitioner who has worked in the field of child sexual abuse for approximately 13 years, examining over 4000 children from birth to age 18 and testifying as an expert witness approximately 90 times in both criminal and civil proceedings throughout Middle TN. She is a Clinical Director at the Our Kids Center and faculty in the Vanderbilt School of Medicine, Dept. of Pediatrics. Ms. Gallion has presented at both National and local conferences on topics related to child sexual abuse and published original research. She earned a BSN from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 1985 and a Master’s Degree in Nursing in 1997 from Belmont University in Nashville TN. Ms. Gallion is certified as a pediatric nurse practitioner by the American Nurses Credentialing Center and SANE-P certified.
