Target Audience:This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of nurses, physicians, and other health and legal professionals involved in the treatment and care of victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.
Statement of Need/Program Overview:
SANE nurses are in need of case studies that illustrate use of evidence based practice in the care of pediatric patients with a concern of physical and/or sexual abuse.
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:
- Recognize normal pre-pubertal female genital anatomy and non-specific anatomical variants.
- Recognize acute and chronic ano-genital exam findings.
- Describe assessment of physical abuse injuries.

Gail Hornor is a pediatric nurse practitioner working at the Center for Family Safety and Healing at Nationwide Children's Hospital. She also coordinates the pediatric sexual assault nurse program in the Emergency Department. For the past twenty years she has been a member of the child abuse program which has evolved into the Child Advocacy Center. In this role she has worked extensively with families at high risk for abuse and neglect. She has been a member of IAFN for over 20 years and has published over twenty five articles and book chapters discussing various aspects of child maltreatment.
